How to write a business analyst resume / BA resume

Business analysts are a group of people with different types of responsibilities. They have a large scope to cover within an organization. Also, there are a number of different organizations that business analysts can be involved in such as IT, finance, etc.

Depending on their field of work, the tasks they have to perform and the responsibilities they have may vary. That’s why it’s always important to tailor your resume to each job advertisement.

Now let’s see how to build your BA resume step by step.

01. Start with a compelling summary

Recruiters don’t spend much time inspecting resumes. They often just skim read and take a deep look only if they feel the particular resume is awesome. So the first Impression is always important.

The resume summary is the best way to grab their attention at first sight. Adding a few of your key points to it will make it very easy for your resume to get their attention.

Hiring managers are fond of knowing your skills. They prefer to recruit people with analytical skills, prioritization skills and especially teamwork skills. So don’t forget to mention them in your business analyst resume summary.

02. Describe your professional experience as a business analyst

It is very important to write the experience section of the resume correctly. Many people are accustomed to mentioning their job duties and responsibilities in this section. But it is a completely outdated method. Because hiring managers are well aware of the nature and role of jobs, so that information will not be able to impress them.

However, at present, if you want to become a business analyst, you need to show the achievements you got in your previous job instead of mentioning the job duties. Adding any quantified results and action verbs could make this section more powerful.

We suggest you mention at least 3-4 achievement bullet points with quantified points.

For example, look at the following two points.

  1. Analyzed business optimization projects.
  2. Completed in-depth analysis for business optimization projects and increased the revenue by 22.31%.

In the first point above, only the duty is mentioned. So recruiters are not expecting to see these kinds of job descriptions in your business analyst resume.

But take a look at the second point. It has what you did as a business analyst and the result you obtained. Also the point is strengthened with an action verb and quantified result. So we can identify that as a perfect resume bullet point.

So these kinds of bullet points can actually impress employers. Such bullet points ensure that you can perform the relevant tasks and that’s what employers need at all.

03. Mention your educational qualifications

There is no exact format for listing education to suit a business analyst position. You can just list your educational qualifications in a few lines by mentioning your degree name, university name, studied duration, GPA, honours, courses, and anything else you might want to add.

You may be wondering what kind of a degree you need to have to become a business analyst. However, nowhere is mentioned that you really need to have a definite degree to become a Business Analyst.

But having a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Business Administration or Information Technology is listed in many job adverts as an advantage to become a business analyst.

04. Insert skills in your business analyst resumes

A good written skill section can add a substantial value to your BA resume. So how do you know what skills to include in your resume to make it stand out?

We cannot give a definite answer to this. Because required skills may vary from company to company. So the best thing is to read your job advertisement carefully and identify the skills listed there. Also you can refer to the company website to get more ideas about the company expertise.

Demonstrating the most relevant hard and soft skills relevant to the job you intend to apply will enable recruitment managers to think that you are the best person for the job.

Making a resume skill section using the keywords from the job advertisement will make it much easier for you to get through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) too.

So if you incorporate the following business analyst skills into your resume, it will undoubtedly be a competitive BA resume.

  • Business Analysis
